Writers Converge for Philly Library's First Writer's Salon

April 27, 2004--Philadelphia is ripe for an arts renaissance, as four influential Delaware Valley writers gather for the Philadelphia Free Library’s first Writers’ Salon on Saturday, May 1st at 2PM. The salon is part of a grassroots effort to focus attention on the wealth of talent in the Philly area and promote the written word.

“What is currently being dubbed as good and acceptable in literature has become narrowly focused and exclusive,” says participant and host Christopher Klim (author Everything Burns, Jesus Lives in Trenton). “Exclusion, politically correct, reverence, polite even, runs against every precept of a vocation in letters.”

The Writers’ Salon is free and will open windows to several diverse areas within the contemporary writing craft, ranging from children's writing to adult prose. Attendees will get to mingle with the writers and ask questions during and after the presentation.

Participants include playwright Ed Shockley, children’s author and editor Kathye Fetsko Petrie, poet Marj Hahne, and author Christopher Klim. Shockley is the Sondheim Award-winning playwright of Bessie Smith Empress of the Blues and recent offerings within the city. Kathye Fetsko Petrie is the children’s author of Flying Jack and the senior editor of Local Lit Magazine. Marj Hahne’s latest poetry collection can be heard on Notspeak. Christopher Klim is author of the novels, Jesus Lives in Trenton and Everything Burns, and a book on the writing craft, Write to Publish.

“Writing as an art form is about truth and ideas,” Christopher Klim said in a recent interview. “The stage set in a play, book, or poem dares to be honest. You can’t categorize or suppress the truth.”

Klim is also the senior editor of the new literary magazine Writers Notes, which was recently compared to The Paris Review in spirit. His latest novel, Everything Burns, is being called “Absorbing reading” by Booklist and is quickly becoming a public library favorite.
